How does being a carrier of DMD affect mothers, and what are the chances of passing it to children?

Mothers who carry the DMD gene mutation can experience some symptoms themselves, though typically milder than males with DMD. Between 2.5 percent and 20 percent of female carriers may develop symptoms and are known as "manifesting carriers."

Symptoms that female carriers might experience include:

* Milder muscle weakness that may not appear until the teens or early adulthood
* Difficulty with activities like walking or climbing stairs as they age
* Heart problems like cardiomyopathy (weakened heart muscle)
* Breathing complications

Most female carriers have a second, healthy X chromosome that acts as a "backup," helping protect their muscles from more severe damage.

Regarding passing DMD to children: Since DMD is on the X chromosome and follows X-linked recessive inheritance, each child of a carrier mother has a 50 percent chance of inheriting the affected X chromosome. This means:

* Sons who inherit the affected X chromosome will have DMD
* Daughters who inherit it will be carriers (and may or may not have mild symptoms)

The "3 out of 4 kids carry DMD" isn't quite accurate. Each pregnancy has independent odds, but statistically, about half of a carrier mother's children would inherit the gene mutation.
