What are the symptoms of muscular dystrophy?

Muscular dystrophy (MD) symptoms vary depending on the type and how far it has progressed. The most common symptom across all types is progressive muscle weakness, which tends to worsen over time.

Here are some of the key symptoms to be aware of:

Mobility and movement
- Difficulty walking, running, or climbing stairs
- Frequent falls or balance problems
- A waddling gait (unusual walking style)
- Walking on the balls of the feet

Upper body
- Trouble lifting arms above the head
- Shoulder blades that stick out (scapular winging)
- Weakness in the face, shoulders, or upper arms

Other physical symptoms
- Muscle cramping, aching, or soreness
- Joint stiffness or contractures (tightened muscles/tendons)
- Scoliosis (curved spine)
- Trouble swallowing
- Breathing or heart problems (more common in later stages)

Symptoms in children may look a little different, showing up as delayed walking, clumsiness, slow growth, or difficulty keeping up with peers physically.

It's worth noting that some symptoms aren't always visible to others — things like fatigue, breathing challenges, and learning differences can also be part of living with MD.

If you notice any new or worsening symptoms, it's always a good idea to check in with your healthcare team.
