Are you experiencing muscle tightness and stiffness in your shoulders, trapezius, upper thighs, and hips with OPMD?

With OPMD, muscle weakness and wasting (atrophy) can spread beyond the eyes and throat over time. The shoulders and upper arms are commonly affected areas as the condition progresses, and weakness can eventually reach the hips and upper legs too. The stiffness and tightness you're feeling may be related to muscle contractures — where healthy muscle tissue gets replaced by scar tissue and fat. Scar tissue is stiff and inflexible, which can pull on joints and cause them to feel tight or stuck.

Here are some things worth discussing with your care team:

- Physical therapy to help maintain flexibility and range of motion
- Stretching routines tailored to affected muscle groups
- Assistive devices if mobility is becoming harder
- Pain management options if discomfort is significant

It's really important to keep your doctor in the loop about any new or worsening symptoms, as staying ahead of changes can make a meaningful difference in your quality of life.
